Even if you're not a self-professed gym rat, there's a certain allure to knowing your stuff at the gym. Chances are, if you've ever hit up a circuit-style workout class or had a personal training session (or just perused our strength training content on, you've seen the word "superset" as part of the usual strength training routine. But as common as supersets might be, there's still a lot of confusion about what they are and how to do them right.

At its very core, a superset is simple: alternating sets of two different exercises with no rest in between. For example, doing a set of biceps curls and a set of triceps dips, alternating until you've completed all the sets.


But when it comes to choosing exercises, things get a little hairy. "One of the biggest misconceptions is that you can throw two exercises together and you just smoke yourself, and that the goal is to get tired and sweaty," says Asics Laufshorts
